– Hello, my name is Dr. Ben Thompson. In 2021 and 2022 OTO-313 was
a promising research project that made us think this could vAI OTO
become a cure for tinnitus. After time the results have come in, and now we’re thinking differently. In this video I’m going to review the most recent update for
OTO-313, and ask the question, is this a cure for tinnitus or not? Before we get into the video vAI OTO
about OTO-313 I wanted to ask, did you know that Treble Heath has the leading online telehealth service connecting you with tinnitus experts to perform tinnitus treatment including work with tinnitus maskers, devices that can reduce
the tinnitus perception? Just this past week, I
had a patient talk to me on a free consultation, and he was shocked that he could actually speak with me. He had watched number of YouTube videos, and he knew what we were
doing was the leading science and the leading evidence-based
approach for tinnitus.

But only after having a
free consultation with us, did he realize what that truly meant. If you or anyone you know
need help with tinnitus, please take advantage of
our online consultation, courtesy of Treble Health, you can find the link in the description. The backstory for OTO-313 is that the research company Otonomy originally started this project in 2020, and the biopharmaceutical
company has been the pioneer of drug delivery to the ear for tinnitus. Now, they had this syringe
going through the eardrum, and they were putting this material that was eventually
connecting with the cochlea, the hearing organ. And the theory was that the
solution called Gacyclidine could help reduce the
auditory nerve fibers in the cochlea, the hearing organ, and eventually reduce tinnitus. In the initial trial about
43% of OTO-313 patients reported a clinically
meaningful improvement on the Tinnitus Functional
Index questionnaire. One thing we loved about the
OTO-313 study for tinnitus is that it truly had
a double blind effect, meaning that there was a control group. And the control group did not know whether they received the
active compound or a placebo.
If you have tinnitus and
are studying the research, you’ve probably realized that yourself, that if a research group
does not have a true control, then it’s hard to know how much of the placebo effect took place. The placebo effect can be
quite strong for tinnitus. There’s also this natural habituation. If you don’t already
know what habituation is, it’s a process that can reduce the perception of tinnitus over time. And through that mental
process, which is natural and can be induced
through professional help and tinnitus maskers devices on your ears, your brain can reduce tinnitus.
And through that process the sound usually gets softer too. Now, for the update, let’s put the image here on the screen. Otonomy reports results from
phase two clinical trial of OTO-313 in patients with tinnitus. Now, let’s talk about the key points from the newest update August
1st, 2022 from Otonomy. Number one, OTO-313 demonstrated no clinically meaningful improvement versus placebo across all time points. Number two, the company Otonomy is to discontinue the
development of OTO-313. This may be disappointing
news as it was to me, and unfortunately, this
is what has to happen when scientific community tries to crack a difficult problem. It’s okay to feel upset, many patients who work
with us via telehealth have a similar sentiment, that there’s a frustration
and an anger asking, how has the scientific
community not solved tinnitus? Why don’t we have a cure? We’re all in this together. And research like that from Otonomy gets us one step closer to finding a cure. If you’re wondering what is the best cure
for tinnitus right now? What can I do? How should I get better with this? I want to introduce habituation, and how a sound therapy
treatment plan, in my opinion, is the best tinnitus treatment alongside CBT, cognitive
behavioral therapy in 2022 at the time making this video.
What we’ve learned over the years is that there’s many alternative
approaches to tinnitus, there’s many new research developments. But what actually works? That’s the question that we ask ourselves, that’s the question that our doctors our audiologists on
staff at Treble Health, that’s the question that we focus on when we can connect you
with the best treatment, one that will actually
get to the root cause of your tinnitus, then
you are likely to succeed. Tinnitus at this time is not
something that has a cure, it is something that has
therapy and treatments.
And when I say therapy,
what do you think of? You might think of a psychologist, and talking about feelings and emotions. Well, there’s some of
that in tinnitus therapy, but the therapies and
treatments for tinnitus typically break down to this, on one side, which I would
recommend doing first, a comprehensive approach to sound therapy. Sound therapy treatment plan. Don’t try to solve this yourself with bone conduction headphones, AirPods, just using your phone.
There are medical devices
that are designed for tinnitus that have been manufactured,
tested, approved designed for tinnitus that we use because they work the best, that we recommend to our patients who end up having success stories and don’t have to worry
about tinnitus again. I’d like to now put on the screen an image which shows the
four stages of habituation.
If you’re not familiar with
this, take a good look. You fall into one of these
categories with your tinnitus. Stage one being the most
severe, the most anxiety, insomnia, hyper-focusing on tinnitus, can’t seem to get it out of your head or out of your thoughts. Stage four is where we want to go, meaning that you’re in
the habituated state. You rarely hear tinnitus,
it doesn’t affect you, you’re hearing it less
than 20% of your day, and it’s not triggering you or bothering you that
much when you hear it.
That’s the journey that
we can take you on, that’s the journey that I want for every single patient who contacts us, and has a consultation, learns about their treatment options. We know that the lifeblood of the tinnitus community
is success stories, hope, and understanding that
there is a way out of this. And I wanted to make it clear, even though research for a
cure like OTO-313 did not work.
There are treatments and therapies that if you haven’t tried, fully tried, I need you to consider. And if you’re looking for
a specialist, an expert, to help you along the way
that’s what we’ve designed. Over the last number of years we’ve gotten better, and better, and better at treating
tinnitus, and we use telehealth, meaning Zoom calls and tinnitus maskers that are shipped to the patient’s house. If you want to work with our team you can find us@tribalhealth.com. My name is Dr. Ben Thompson, I really appreciated
making this video for you. If this message resonated, please leave a thumbs up or a comment.
If you’d like to schedule a
